3 Europeans, 29 Russians, 1 Indian Inspector, Chinese Interpreter, about 55 Indian Special Guards, about 900 Indian and Chinese Government watchmen and in addition 7 Russian and 47 Chinese Anti-sabotage guards, set free by the cessation of guarding of shipping in the harbour. These details were employed during the war as follows:-

Administration and supervision. Duty at Government House, Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank, Government Treasury at Windsor House and South China Morning Post offices, Japanese Consulate, Police Head- quarters before and after trans- fer to Gloucester Building and reinforcements to Eastern and Shaukiwan divisions.

Employed under the Russians and also guarding Central. Magistracy. Guard duty at "Protected Places" Food Control and Military godowns Banks, large and important busi- ness premises and Government, buildings and offices. Fifty Indian watchmen originally to be allocated under the Internal Security Scheme to the Naval Dockyard as reinforcements to the Dockyard Police but not actually required were employed with the 47 Anti-Sabotage guards and about 20 Police Reservists for duty daily at the various Food distributing centres in Central, Western and Eastern divisions.

Special Branch officers sealed the Japanese Consu- late General and completed internment of Consular Officials and staff under Police Guard at No.7 Conduit Road.

Chief Inspector Smith after handing over charge of the P.T.S. to Sub Inspector Baker took up duty with the Senior Superintendent of Police, Kowloon. His chief duty wasto assist in sending and receiv- ing telephone messages. He states he experienced very great difficulty in getting on to required numbers as both incoming and outgoing lines were extremely overloaded.

2nd Assistant Superintendent of Police, Kowloon took up post at Yaumati as No.3 Sub Area Commander. He completed arrangements for Police in his Sub area to go to dispersal points.

In spite of two Police foot and one mobile patrol constantly out on duty in the district big crowds, many persons with no hope of obtaining the required permission, gathered outside the Y.M.Č.A. office used for issue of cross harbour passes and required special action in the way of dispersal and control throughout the day. This action had to be repeated on the 9th.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Kowloon, took post at A.R. P. Battle Headquarters, Kowloon Go- downs, henceforth described as Kowloon Police Headquarters.

Squads sent out to control crowds in rice shops in Hollywood Road, Des Voeux Road, Bonham Strand East and Queen's Road Central. Note:- Emergency Unit
